Is there anything not to like about the intrauterine devices (IUDs)? Once you implant the little T-shaped contraception in your uterus, you can finally stop worrying about condom fails and forgetting to take your birth control pills. But how will that small device change your sex life? Will your partner be able to feel it? Here’s all you need to know about sex when you have an IUD.
Your IUD Won’t Affect Your Sex Drive
Neither the hormonal nor the non-hormonal types of IUD will impact your sexual desire. Since the IUD is placed in your uterine cavity, you will not be able to see it or feel it. It will, therefore, not have an impact on your sex life.
Your Partner May Feel the IUD Strings
The IUD, if placed correctly, sits in the uterus while the strings extend into the vagina. It can be possible that your partner may feel the strings during intercourse, especially when you first get the device. Eventually, they will soften and curl upwards out of the way. If it is still a problem for your partner, see your gynaecologist, they can always trim the strings.
A Hormonal IUD might Affect Your Menstrual Cycle
If you always experienced heavy flow and cramping during periods, the hormonal IUD may be a blessing. It usually makes your periods lighter, and some women don’t have a period altogether. So, if you have never been a fan of period sex, maybe this will be the answer to your prayers. Great news, isn’t it?
You Can Expect More Spontaneous Sex
When you do not have to think about the condom or remember to take your pill, you can have more spur-of-the-moment sex. That said, you should still use a condom if you are not aware of your partner’s sexual history as there is still a risk of sexually transmitted infections.
You Might Notice Some Spotting Post-Sex
Although uncommon, hormonal IUDs can cause some bleeding during sex. Hormonal IUDs thin out the endometrial lining which may make you bleed a little during intercourse. If you notice spotting, be sure to talk it out with your doctor to understand the exact cause.
No Sex Position is Off Limits
Will you be able to get into your favourite sex position with an IUD? Yes, you will! You will not be able to feel the IUD during sex at all if the device is appropriately placed in your uterus. But will rough sex dislodge your IUD? Very unlikely. The IUD can slip out, this usually happens if it is placed right after childbirth, if you have heavy menstrual cramps, or if you have fibroids in your uterus. The expulsion rate ranges from 3-10% per cent, and if it happens can easily be replaced by your gynaecologist.
